Abstract: Only a few studies on the economic returns to Ph.D. education have been undertaken. Based on a new kind of data, lifetime earnings and human capital by Ph.D.’s are estimated separately by identical regression models. Both measures are relative to holders of a M.Sc./M.A. degree. Based on crosssection data, the overall finding is that for most subject fields and sectors (academia, government, and business) lifetime earnings by Ph.D. graduates taken from the time of their master graduation are lower than by master graduates. As an indicator of relative human capital by Ph.D. education, accumulated salaries by Ph.D. holders are 8 percent higher than by masters.
