Abstract: The Paper analyses the factors that affect the ability of students to pass the bachelor degree in social science at the University of Copenhagen. Ability in mathematics plays a role for passing in law and economics but not in political science, psychology, anthropology and sociology. Students with low grade point averages and low grades in mathematics have a larger probability to opt out of mathematics in high school. This affects their ability to pass studies with relatively easy access such as law and economics. The paper includes a discussion of the implications for the admission policy to the higher educational system.
