Abstract: In this article we formulate an econometric model to explain the use of Xray of the lumbar spine in primary care patients aged 20-49 years with low back pain. The model is used as a very simple tool to compare the usage of X-ray in the Danish counties. The benchmark model has the advantage that it takes county specific characteristics into account before comparing the level of X-ray examinations of the lumbar spine in patients with low back pain. The model is subsequently used to make a health economic assessment of the costs associated with unexplained excess usage of X-ray.
