Two Tests of Divorce Behaviour on Danish Marriage Market Data

Abstract: In this paper I provide a test of the two dominating theories of divorce. The first theory suggests that deviations between expected and realised utility of marriage drives divorce. This hypothesis is tested in terms of earnings and the results show interesting asymmetries between men and women. The second theory suggests that learning about match quality is crucial. This theory is tested by investigating whether couples that cohabited prior to marriage are more likely to endure. The presented results suggest they are.
