Abstract: The study uses a generalised version of the Weibull duration model to analyse periods of unemployment for Danish men and women during the 1980s. The analysis shows that there are considerable differences in both the expected duration of pe - riods of unemployment and the effects of the duration of unemployment. More detailed analyses reveal that nevertheless, job prospects for both sexes are negatively affected by longer periods of unemployment. Analyses are made for different types of employees to see which labour market categories are most badly affected by the negative effects of long-term unemployment. The implications of the model for labour market policies are discussed.
