Abstract: This study exploits a natural experiment in Denmark caused by two health care law changes to identify the impact of co-payment for sterilisation at public hospitals on the demand for these service. Results show that the introduction of the co-payment caused a significant reduction in the utilisation of sterilisation procedures in both men and women and a shift to mainly male sterilisations performed in private hospitals. I find price elasticities of about -0.3 for both men and women. However, the price elasticity varies by income, age, family type, education, and employment status.
